Different Types of CNC Machines

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine is all about how manufacturers and operators control and run production gears using a computer program. These machines use a language identified as g-code, which instructs the device on how to cut, mold, grind, shape, or melt different materials such as wood, plastic, or metal. There are numerous types of CNC machines in the market, out of which some are prominent due to their extensive range of uses. The following are some of the existing types of CNC machines.

Milling Machine

The milling machines are usually retrofitted with CNC technology, whereby the method involving subtraction of all mechanisms manufactured into the machine makes it easy to operate. Some of the mechanisms which are detached are Digital Read Out electronics and handwheels. Also, the old lead screw is substituted with high accuracy ball screws, and novel mounts are constructed to enable mounting of the actuators to the machine.

These machines speedily rotate the material on a shaft. During the gyration, the material is constrained against a crushing or carving tool, which cuts it into the wanted shape. Lathes are generally used to cut symmetrical items such as spheres, cones, or cylinders.

The CNC router is a prevalent type of machinery that is assembled exclusively to be functioned using CNC technology. Generally, this machine has no human edge other than the computer. Routers are used in the manufacturing of huge dimension components of wood, metal sheets, and plastics. They are mostly produced in a three-axis Cartesian coordinate, which permits cutting in three dimensions. However, there are routers that fabricated in 4, 5, or 6-axis, which are mostly used to cut prototype models and intricate shapes.

CNC Plasma Cutter

Plasma cutters are very much alike to the routers both in size and arrangement. However, CNC plasma cutters don’t need a powerful setup because they do not drag a spinning tool in the material since they fly above the table with a plasma torch. Mostly, the plasma cutters are manufactured to cut two-dimensional profile shapes into sheet metal.

CNC Laser Cutter

The laser cutters run with the same principle as the plasma cutters, with the only variance being the fact that a powerful laser is used to do the cutting instead of the plasma torch. These cutters are perfect for cutting plastic, metal, and wood.
